Walker Books – August 2009

Katrina lives with her grandmother above their coffee shop in the sleepy town of Nordby.  Anna’s Old World Scandinavian Coffeehouse has been a standby in Nordby for years, but when sleak and shiny new Java Heaven moves in right next door, business starts to suffer.

Katrina enjoys her morning routine of getting the coffee brewing for her grandma before she heads to school.  One morning on her way to throw out some trash, Katrina sees a young man sleeping in the alley.  Startled at first, Katrina hurrys back inside.  It is only when she is gathering the day-old pastries that she thinks this “homeless” man could maybe use something to eat and puts them out on the back step along with a hot cup of coffee.

Little does she know that she has performed a selfless act of kindness for an angel.  Malcolm is in Nordby delivering a message and just needed to take a break, but because of Katrina’s good deed, he now has the added pressure of granting her deepest desire before he can move on.  The problem is, Katrina doesn’t have any idea what her deepest desire is.

COFFEEHOUSE ANGEL is a light-hearted tale of love and friendship.  Suzanne Selfors uses wonderful language to describe the small town and its quirky inhabitants.  The reader easily feels like one of the family and will want to organize a campaign to close the evil Java Heaven.

Coming March 2009

The third and final installment in the Mortal Instruments trilogy definitely lives up to the reputation of the first two – CITY OF BONES and CITY OF ASHES.  CITY OF GLASS picks up a short time after CITY OF ASHES ends.  Clary has a mission.  Madeleine, her mother’s friend, is possibly the only person who knows how to wake her mother from a coma.  Clary will have to travel to Alicante in Idris to get what she needs.

Alicante is the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters.  It is known as the City of Glass because of the beautifully tall glass towers that guard the city from harm.  The only way to get to Idris is through a portal and Magnus, the warlock, has arranged one.  Clary is planning to go through the portal with Jace and the Lightwoods.  The only problem is, Jace doesn’t want Clary to go so he lies to her about when he and the Lightwoods are leaving.  He thinks it is too dangerous for Clary.

After being left behind, Clary eventually finds her way to Alicante.  She uses her ability to create runes and makes a portal for herself.  Being new to the Shadowhunter world, Clary doesn’t know that using a portal and entering the city without permission is against the law. If she is found she could be put to death.

Once in the City of Glass, Clary is thrown in the middle of the largest battle the Shadowhunters have ever had to face.  Valentine’s evil plans are in the final stages and everyone is on full alert, not knowing what he will do next.  Jace and Clary’s complicated relationship keeps them just as confused as ever, but provides great excitement for the reader.

Cassandra Clare works magic with this novel.  The excitement begins on the first page and doesn’t stop until the final sentence.  She brings everything full circle for a completely satisfying ending – even though fans would be more than happy to read about these beloved characters forever.  One thing Cassandra Clare fans need to keep an eye out for is the release of THE CLOCKWORK PRINCESS: VOLUME 1 of THE INFERNAL DEVICES.  THE INFERNAL DEVICES is a trilogy of prequels set one hundred and forty years ago in Victorian England.  Tessa, a warlock, is the main character.  The first prequel to the Mortal Instruments trilogy is scheduled to be released Fall 2010.

eternal_coverDid you read TANTALIZE and love it?  Maybe you haven’t even heard of it.  Either way it doesn’t matter.  ETERNAL is set in the same world as TANTALIZE, but takes place earlier in the timeline.  Completely different characters grace the pages of ETERNAL that you will grow to love.  Reading TANTALIZE first isn’t necessary, so in February when ETERNAL hits the shelves run to the bookstore and get your copy.

Miranda is a quiet and shy typical teenage girl.

Zachary is her Guardian Angel (GA).

Miranda has no idea Zachary exists.

Over the years of keeping watch over Miranda, Zachary has fallen in love with her.

Their status quo interaction completely changes one night in a creepy cemetery. Miranda’s best friend Lucy drags her to the cemetery to meet some guys for an exciting night out. Miranda doesn’t want to be there in the first place and lags behind until she is lost.  As Zachary watches Miranda stumble through the darkness, he sees she is about to step into an abandoned open grave.  Knowing she’ll probably fall and break her neck, Zachary does the first thing that comes to mind in order to save her – he reveals himself by yelling for her to stop and illuminating himself using his angel light so she can see where she is walking.

Two things happen simultaneously.

1) Michael, the arch angel, appears and strips Zachary of his wings and his ability to become ethereal for breaking the rules and revealing himself to humans.

2) Miranda is attacked by a vampire and taken away to be the current Dracula’s princess heir.

With Zachary stuck wandering the mortal world and Miranda a vampire princess how in the world is he going to protect her now?

ETERNAL was a fast and enjoyable read.  The pages fly by and getting to the end comes too soon.  The third book in this series is called BLESSED and the characters from both TANTALIZE and ETERNAL will cross over and I for one can’t wait to see what happens when they meet.
