Generation Dead is Daniel Water’s first novel and he did a bang up job! He captured the voices of teenagers who are navigating their way through the trials and tribulations of high school. The only difference between a regular high school and the high school in this book is that for some reason, and no one knows why – not even the scientists, SOME teenagers that die aren’t staying dead. They are referred to as “living impaired” or “differently biotic.”
Phoebe, a goth to the bone girl, is the main character of this interesting story. Adam is her best friend, football star, next door neighbor. Margi is her best friend. Together they experience life with the “differently biotic” – each are affected a different way.
Phoebe becomes fascinated and starts to fall for Tommy, the leader of the “differently biotic” kids. Since all of the zombies, as they like to call themselves, don’t come back the same – meaning some move and communicate better than others – Tommy makes sure some of the lower functioning ones aren’t left alone walking through the halls or in the cafeteria. Phoebe’s feelings for Tommy cause a lot of talk. People can’t believe she would want to have anything to do with a dead person.
Adam has to deal with Tommy in his own way. Tommy decides he wants to join the football team. The coach doesn’t want him to, of course, but the principal tells him he has no choice. Adam is the only player that gives Tommy a chance and sees what a great player he really is. The problem is, Adam starts to realize he has feelings that go beyond friendship for Phoebe and a love triangle is formed.
Margi can’t understand why Phoebe is warming up to the zombies. One of their best friends is one and Margi can’t seem to get past that Colette was once alive and hung out with them all the time. She struggles to see what Phoebe likes about the zombies.
This fresh look at teen fiction contains it all. Light romance, paranormal oddities, danger, and suspense. Be sure to check this out as soon as it hits the shelf.

OMG this book was fantastic! I saw it on the shelves and I just had to have it! I totally felt for Phoebe, and for Tommy as well. I felt for him the most, all of the Differently Biotic kids, because they all died in the best years of their lives. You can feel their pain and want. How much they disire to be accepted into a normal life again, without being segregated for what they are. I hated Pete throughout the book, but you have to feel for him too, at some point. The way he slips more and more into insanity and thinking he sees ‘Julie’ in Phoebe. He actually thinks she is Julie. It’s really quite sad, because you know he never got over her. He was deeply in love with her, even at a young age. The way he found out was terrible, and it definitely marked him for life. It still doesn’t forgive him for all he put the differently biotic kids through, but it does show everywhere in the book he’s not in his right mind. He’s a jerk in his right mind, not a psychopath. Adam is clearly in love with Phobe from the getgo, and it’s really quite sad, because in all likelyhood won’t happen. Karen is just freaking awesome. Nuff said. Colette just makes my heart constrict, because you know it had to hurt having everyone turn you away like your a stray dog off the street. Especially by the people closest to her. But she still has the heart, (no pun intened), to forgive these people. Margi is pretty cool, but she isn’t as happy as she should be because the guilt of turning away a close friend in need is crushing her. She finally sees the light, and knows Colette’s death was not her fault. Overall, this book was fantastic. I am sure that everyone will love it. I already had four people at my school that wanted to borrow it the first day I got it.
I thought I would share my insight! Hope you like!

I love this book. I think it would make a really good movie.
May 23, 2008 at 6:44 pm
Oh my gosh. My neighbour lent me this book, and I read it in less than 12 hours (Including breaks for sleeping, and school.)
Personally, I love Phoebe and Adam together, because I believe Karen (who RULES) and Tommy (who sounds amazing) are into each other.
There will be a sequal right?
May 24, 2008 at 4:04 pm
The book is amazing and i luv it!!! if u make it a movie that would be sooo cool!!! I luv how cool phoebe is!! she is my favorite!!!
May 26, 2008 at 12:50 am
I would love to see this as a movie and how they would make the differently biotic kids look. I really liked this book.
June 5, 2008 at 2:21 pm
This was an amazing book. I sound like an idiot saying this, but it made me cry at the end. There has to be a sequel. I cant get over how much i love this book. It really made me think. If a movie was made for it, that would be great but i hope they would do a good job unlike a lot of the other movies based on books.
June 10, 2008 at 4:57 pm
OMG!!!! i loved this book!!!!! it made me cry, like 6 times. amazing writing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 16, 2008 at 5:15 pm
This book was pretty radical.

I couldn’t believe what Tommy said at the end.
I cried.
I loved this book.

July 1, 2008 at 12:13 am
I love this book!!
I felt for every character in a different way! Especially Adam!
I want to know if there will be a second book because I HAVE 2 know what will happen to Adam!
I refuse to think that he becomes a “living impaired” or zombie as they call themselves.
I would just like to thank Daniel Waters for writing a book that I couldnt put down!
July 3, 2008 at 11:23 am
I absolutely loved this book!!
I read it in about two days and I really hope that this dude keeps writing
The only thing I didn’t LOVE about it was the end
I didn’t like how Adam died
And I got really confused with relationships
Like in the end, did she still love Tommy??
Or did she realize she had feelings for Adam??
And that one comment she made about Tommy hesitating confused me, it was like she realized he was a bad person or something
But he’s not
And I also really hated Pete
I didn’t really care if he was just upset because Julie died
He was a horrible person and killed two people
One of which did not come back
But I would love to see a sequel to this book
And I think it would make a great movie
July 3, 2008 at 1:18 pm
This was a great book! i just finished it, but was kinda disappointed in the ending. Was I the only one who detected a conspiracy with the Undead Studies Class? Well, maybe I am but there should definitely be a sequel, I agree with casey, i hope he desn’t become a zombie because he and pheobe are perfect!
July 3, 2008 at 11:19 pm
THERE BETTER BE A SEQUEL OR I WILL BE SO MAD. haha adam and phoebe BELONG.
July 7, 2008 at 1:22 pm

July 12, 2008 at 5:34 pm
just finished it.. the end was shocking.. I loved the entire thing though..Adam isnt the typical football jock and that plus Pheobe as the goth and Tommy as the “zombie” made a great book
July 17, 2008 at 11:09 am
i am reading the book right now and im in the middle of it, i can definitely picture this as a movie… but you have to read the book first!
July 20, 2008 at 6:24 pm
i was soooo unsatisfied with the ending of this book (mainly because i got so into Adam!!) there must be a sequel…i mean there are so many things that remain unanswered! and i agree that this would make a sick movie…maybe someone like tim burton could get in on it
July 22, 2008 at 9:41 am
I want the sequel:the kiss of life.I want to know what happened to Adam!I had a great time reading this book.
July 22, 2008 at 12:13 pm
Hi Karin,
Thank you for posting on my blog. I do believe that yours was the first ever review of Generation Dead, one that gave me great peace of mind as a new author. I’ll make certain that you get an arc of Kiss of Life as soon as it is produced.
Thank you,
Dan

u guys r soooo right this book is fantastic!!!! I finished reading the twiligt series by stephenie meyer which by the way is sooo much better than harry potter or any other series book!! So when I finished reading the series I absolutely needed another book that would be great to read and in an article I found out that generation dead was so alike to the twilight series so I ran to the book store and bought it and in less than one day I finished reading it !!! It is so interesting!! I love Adam and phoebe and tommy is just a fascinating character. I defintely hope that Daniel Walters will write a sequel to it and that they would make a movie like they did for twilight!!!!!!!!!!
I have one thing to say: bravo mr. Walters u did an excellent job!!!!

August 20, 2008 at 11:20 pm
i loved this book and i’m not ashamed to admit i cried at the end. even if adam is now a “zombie” i NEED him and phoebe to get together, they’re the perfect couple, tommy and phoebe would never work as well as A and P.
but seriously-the best book i’ve read in a long time!
August 25, 2008 at 4:09 pm
I really enjoyed this book. My favorite character would definetly have to be adam. There better be a sequel to this…so many unanswered questions….that I don’t want to type out in fear of giving stuff away.
September 1, 2008 at 7:30 pm

September 24, 2008 at 12:07 pm
so why are the teens coming back…was is supposed to understand this…
September 25, 2008 at 9:13 am
I loved this book. I’d read the Twilight saga before and when I started reading GD I was like ‘this is crap’ because my expectations were higher after reading Twilight. I loved it though because you feel for every character in different ways. You kinda wanna slap Phoebe at some points in the book and just shout ‘FOR GOD’S SAKE! HE’S IN LOVE WITH YOU, YOU MORON!’ but, of course, it’s a book so you can’t. I also LOVE Karen – she rocks. She reminds me a bit of Alice from the Twilight Saga – don’t ask me why, she just does – and I absoloutley love her! She’s awesome! You kinda feel for Peter too. You’re like ‘die, Peter, you fool’ all the way through the book and then when I got the end I was like ‘awh – you ALMOST feel sorry for him’. The book, the characters and the plot all rock. Awesome book. 1000/10.
September 26, 2008 at 2:10 pm
I love this book it rocks i pick it for my book report it was so good. I’m the kind of person that hates to read but when i stared this book i stayed up all night reading it in til I fell a sleep i hope he makes another one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!=)=)=)=)
September 30, 2008 at 5:17 pm
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AMAZING BOOK!!!!!
it has 2 be a sequal! right??
i mean we want to know what would happen with adam and phoebe and tommy and karen and everyone!!
luv it ♥
everyone should read it!!!
October 2, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Wow that book was really good. not that i’m so much of a phoebextommy person, but i kinda wanted to see the description of what a kiss with a living impaired would be like… anyway i really want to see what happened to Adam, and what the heck they are going to do to Pete for killing him. lol. if there’s not a sequel, its okay, but it would be very appreciated!
October 5, 2008 at 5:20 pm
I heard that there is going to be a squeal!! It is going to be called The Kiss of Life
October 8, 2008 at 6:13 pm
OMG I LOVE THIS BOOK IT IS SOO GOOD I LOVE THE DEAD PPL I JUST LOVE THIS BOOK
October 20, 2008 at 7:41 pm
i LOVED this book!
i saw the cover and i was just like miiiine!!
i felt so bad for Tommy and Phoebe, but i felt kind of betrayed that Tommy didn’t love Phoebe, he just wanted to make a point, or whatever… if im not mistaken of course, but i felt kinda sadd when she found that out. I was sooooooooo sadd though when Adam died i was so mad! like how could he do that?!?! ughhh it made me sad. i felt unsettled, like that CANNOT be the end of their story! if it is…. well ill just be beyond disappointed.

this has got to be the best book in the history of ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i just cant get ovewr the ending it did not end good adam shouldnt have died and i know this is kind of weird but i sorta got a crush on adam if he was real i would be totally in love with him hie sounds so sweet and i love phoebe and tommy is such a sweet heart he’s really nice and i would maybe be his friend but not to like him but still phoebe and all her friends are awesoem even margie but shes like messed up cuz of of colette and pete is the biggest jerk in any book i’ve ever read EVER! BUT STILL GREAT AMAZING TOTALLY AWESOME BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
October 30, 2008 at 4:05 pm
Omg!!!! I just got done with this book and I’m doing a reading poject about it because its so good!!!!!! I cry and laugh and I couldn’t put it down. I would love to see it in a movie but then they might ruin my pics tht I have in my head about the people in there.
November 3, 2008 at 5:30 am
This book has ‘marketing Franchise’ written all over it. I mean, its not really a very original idea is it? ‘lets copy Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, but instead of vampires lets do zombies!’ – genius. It had to happen. And the girl is obviously a goth and the title obviously had to be ‘Generation Dead’. It must have taken alot of time and effort to come up with that. The writing is okay and it is a nice story, but its very predictable.
November 3, 2008 at 2:10 pm
i love generation dead!!!!!! x
November 7, 2008 at 5:06 pm
This was a freiken fantastic book. I just finished reading it today, and I could reach out to everyone of these characters, Phoebe, Tommy, Adam, Margi, and yes, even Pete. Even though he wasn’t quite insane, he still seemed to show it by his visions of Julie in Phoebe. The parts I hated the most was the last couple of chapters. I seriously cried. But don’t let me ruin it for you. Read it for yourself, and you’ll see what a great author he is. Oh by the way, their other best friend, the one that they stated was Courtney, her real name is Collete. Just letting you know! =D
November 8, 2008 at 12:27 am
Wow, I just found out about this book today, and my friend described it to me. I had an idea for a movie a lot like this, though its location and the zombies are totally different.
November 28, 2008 at 12:19 pm
This book was so amazing I loved it so much. Its really rare for me to actually like teen fiction (I read things like Chuck Palahniuk books, and I absolutely HATED Twilight) but this was so good. It was so captivating and I loved the pairing of Phoebe and Tommy. I pictured Tommy as really attractive and brooding, and Adam as some awkwardly huge kid. The end wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be, I was waiting for Tommy and Phoebe to kiss the entire book and they didn’t! And I hate how it said that Tommy hesitated to help Phoebe. I really didn’t want Adam and Phoebe together, I mean he’s sweet and all but nope, just didn’t like him. Phoebe had her doubts about Tommy’s sincerity in her feelings for her, but only because Tommy has trouble expressing his feelings since he’s, well, dead. I truly believe he loved her. Anyway, can’t wait for the sequel, I’m about to be pissed if Adam and Phoebe couple up though, ahahah. 🙂
November 29, 2008 at 4:11 pm
so i’m about 3/4 of the way finished with the book after buying it last night at Target (amazing store). anyway reading everyone’s comments has really ruined the end for me 😥 but i’ll finished it anyway. i just wanted to say i really want adam to get with karen and tommy and phoebe to be together, but it sounds like tommy and phoebe don’t end up together in the end? and no one really is. so that really sucks and i really want phoebe and tommy to kiss too, but apparently from the post above mine it will not happen 😦 **sad face** which is horrible. but i doubt there will be a sequel. so this was a great book. blah blah blah
🙂 🙂 🙂 ;); :);0;):
haha
November 29, 2008 at 4:14 pm
oh ps– i feel for pete even though he is messed up i just wish he’d stop being so hateful.
i really wish his friend tc of stavis(?) would tell someone or be like man we can’t do this like morgan but i guess it sounds like he won’t 😦 well all i can hope for is all the zombies won’t die in the end:) just that evan kid:( to bad for him 😦
🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

okay. i loved the book! cant wait for the next one to come out. the ended was upsetting. Pete is a nut job, I don’t care why he hates the differently biotic but he is not only messed up in the head but he shoots adam.
Phoebe is a cool girl. but she cant like tommy. that is not only making me sick but what about adam?
adam is my favorite. he takes a bullet for phoebe and loves but is to shy to tell her. even though now that he is a zombie him and phoebe need to go out.
tommy is wierd i mean why did he say “i thought that if i could get a girl a real girl to love me to kiss me i’d come back even more?” HE’S DEAD! okayyy not only is he dead but he is ruining the opportunity of adam and phoebe getting together.
i loved the book. i cant wait for KISS OF LIFE to come out. you are a talented writer. I was crying at the end of the book. i just want you to know you have a gift of grabbing the readers attention and emotion. i am literally counting down the days til KISS OF LIFE comes out. although i am mad that adam dies and comes back as a zombie you are still one of my favorite authors.
December 21, 2008 at 3:47 pm
okayy whoever first of all says phoebe and adam shouldnt be together is a whack job! HELLO HE JUMPED IN FRONT OF HER SO SHE WOULDNT BE SHOT!! and what did tommy do? stare at her. yeah thats what i thought. who is the better man here? ummm ADAM ding ding ding we have a winner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! not only does tommy kinda USE phoebe but he hasnt known her for that long.
adam would do anything to make phoebe happy. he even says “Ill listen to groups like Restless Dead and Zombicide and the Drumming Mummies or whatever, and I’ll wear black and burn incense if i have to. Ill go have my tarot cards read and Ill pay attention to Daffy like she was an incredibly interesting and insightful savant instead of just some chattering goof.” he really loves phoebe and would do anything for her and he would do anything to make her happy. Tommy isnt the same way. he just doesnt have the same kind of love for phoebe that adam does.
oh and p.s. i have to say this and the twilight series are top on my favorite books list!!!!!
December 21, 2008 at 3:51 pm
all of you who cried im with you. i bawled so hard i couldnt see what i was reading so then i had to put the book down and take deep breaths. i also loved how insane pete went by thinking phoebe was julie.
🙂 your writing skills amaze me!!
🙂 this would make a GREAT movie:)
if it is one day. i wouldn’t mind playing phoebe!:)
December 21, 2008 at 4:06 pm
phoebe and adam should get together in the next one. and then so should tommy and karen:) karen reminds me of a nice rosalie (from the twilight saga) because of the way they describe her as beautiful and all. yadda yadda yadda. phoebe reminds me of alice (twilight saga) because she is nice and stuff. adam reminds me of emmett (from the twilight saga) becuase he is a jock, big, funny, and is always sarcastic. Plus he always brings sarcasm to an emotional situation. Margi reminds me of Jessica (from the twilight saga) because she talks way too much.
keep writing daniel. you are the man!!
January 9, 2009 at 5:12 pm

January 26, 2009 at 7:13 pm
Omg I loved this book and I can’t wait til Kiss of Life comes out!! I hope Phoebe falls for Adam. Clearly he has loved her ever since childhood and I hope that they become a couple. I feel for Tommy but I would rather see Phoebe with Adam. After all he did take a bullet for Phoebe. I hope that they fall in love. And Tommy finds that to but not with Phoebe. I wish there was some way to Bring them all back to life. Goodness I love this BOOK like Crazy!!! Wow Daniel you did a very good job for your fist book and I love. I cried all night after I read it. I read this book like 8 times already and I can’t wait til Kiss of life. OH and plus I seen the cover of Kiss of life and Adam is so Damn HOTT NO JOKE. Gosh I wish I was Phoebe but I’m not gothic or pale white or tall. I’m skinny, my hair is long but not pitch black my hair is 24 inchs long no joke and dark dark brown. Plus I’m a brown girl. And i’m hawaiian. I wish this book comes out earlier than may 2009!!!!!!!!!! i’m seriously in love with this book.

this book is soo amazing .. loved it soo much!!
i like tommy at the beganing .. but as the book went i felt as though .. he was using pheobe .. to look normal , be able to feel normal for himself , and he always talk about her as an abotic girl , never just pheobe . i felt as though thats all he saw in her and he only wanted her for tth reason only .where was adam alwayz liked her and near the ned of the book he is even willing to change himself for her !!
i cried soo much at the end .. and i couldn’t belive tommy just stood there when pete was tring to shoot pheobe!!!
pete well .. i feel really sad for him , i know he was heart broken but that gives him no right . to play with other peoples lifes.
i loved karen .. but like as someone said .. i too think that .. tommy and kieran .. theres something going on there 😛
