What did everyone else get?

I made it back from Texas alive.  I didn’t know if that was going to happen with the way I felt through the entire trip.  So, here is the quick recap:

TUESDAY

Woke up early and packed and headed to the airport with my traveling buddy.  I felt okay.  I was looking forward to seeing Cassandra Clare’s session that afternoon.  Arrived in Houston with no problem and got to the convention center and registered just fine.  Found our location and waited for the fun to begin.

Cassandra Clare getting ready to speak at her session on Tuesday.

The session was great!  We also heard Nancy Werlin, Justine Larbalestier, Margo Rabb, and Patrick Jones speak.

After the session we went to the hotel and checked in and got something for dinner.  Then we settled in for an evening of reading. I was finishing COFFEEHOUSE ANGEL (which I totally ended up loving!).

WEDNESDAY

Woke up at a reasonable hour and went to the conference center.  I had a plan.  I had looked ahead to see which publishers would be at the conference and located their booth number.  I also wrote down a wish list of books that I hoped each publisher would be giving away.  It definitely paid to do this.  I came away with most of my list, and definitely all of the ones I was really wanted.  My shoulder was sore by the time I got done carrying around my bag of books at the end of the day.  As far as sickness goes?  I had been enjoying the cycle of spiking fever/take Tylenol/fever breaks/Karin sweats like a crazy person all day.  I had to carry around a washcloth from the hotel room to wipe my face.  I had to pull my hair in a pony tail because it was just too gross without it.  All this on the day I was going to get my picture taken with Cassandra Clare.  I admit, I’m not completely photogenic on a good day, but this was just pitiful!

THURSDAY

Felt so bad that I couldn’t even make it the whole day at the conference.  My poor roommate had to drive me back to the hotel after the first session.  I crawled right into bed and went to sleep.  I didn’t get up until 7PM that night.  Stayed awake a few hours and then slept the whole night with no problem.

FRIDAY

The day I got to go home.  First we got up and packed and checked out of the hotel.  I was just going from minute to minute. Hoping I could keep going.  We went to the conference center and saw Meg Cabot speak.  (I was too far away to get a good picture)  She is so cute.  Just like she looks on her website.  She is just so bubbly and funny.  Even though I felt awful she had me laughing.  I wonder how much her school visits cost?  HA!  Anyway, went to lunch after the conference and then made it to the airport.  I considered it a success.  I just closed my eyes on the plane and kept thinking about home.

SATURDAY

Went to the doctor and got some antibiotics.  After a flu test and some chest xrays the doctor comes back with the generic diagnosis of bronchitis.  GRRRR.  With a fever like that????  Today is the first day I feel human again.

Anyway, while I was gone I also rec’d some books in the mail.

PROPHECY OF THE SISTERS by Michelle Zink
SAY THE WORD by Jeannine Garsee
WILLLOW by Julia Hoban
SOME OF TIM’S STORIES by S.E. Hinton
HOTTIE by Jonathan Bernstein
YOU’VE GOT BLACKMAIL by Rachel Wright
LOOK BOTH WAYS by Jacquelyn Mitchard

So I’m kind of considering this my In My Mailbox post for the week as well since I was too out of it yesterday to post anything.

I didn’t get my last General Exam question finished like I needed to since I was so sick so I’m hoping my advisor will look upon me with kindness and grant me a couple of extra days.  That is what I’ll be working on the rest of the day.  I’m glad to be back among the living though!

I had a slow week which isn’t a bad thing really since I have piles of books I need to be reading anyway.  But, it is always fun to open new packages and touch brand new books.  I suspect I have mail at work, but since it was Spring Break I didn’t go up to the building. So, I’ll have a lot to share in next week’s post.  Anyway, this week’s additions include:

Their hotel is hosting the Miss Teen Queen Pageant and surgically enhanced beauty contestants are everywhere. But when Miss Illinois goes AWOL, it’s up to Aspen to represent her home state and find out what’s really going on. Even if it means putting down the suntan lotion and ignoring Angel’s meltdown over breaking up with Lucas…

The vampire in me was closer to the surface …

Evernight Academy: an exclusive boarding school for the most beautiful, dangerous students of all—vampires. Bianca, born to two vampires, has always been told her destiny is to become one of them.

But Bianca fell in love with Lucas—a vampire hunter sworn to destroy her kind. They were torn apart when his true identity was revealed, forcing him to flee the school.

Although they may be separated, Bianca and Lucas will not give each other up. She will risk anything for the chance to see him again, even if it means coming face-to-face with the vampire hunters of Black Cross—or deceiving the powerful vampires of Evernight. Bianca’s secrets will force her to live a life of lies.

Yet Bianca isn’t the only one keeping secrets. When Evernight is attacked by an evil force that seems to target her, she discovers the truth she thought she knew is only the beginning. . . .

What about everyone else?  I know some of you got a ton of books this week!  Anything great?

Nothing ever happens in Swoon, Connecticut…until Dice’s perfect, privileged cousin Penelope nearly dies in a fall from an old tree, and her spirit intertwines with that of a ghost. His name? Sinclair Youngblood Powers. His mission? Revenge. And while Pen is oblivious to the possession, Dice is all too aware of Sin. She’s intensely drawn to him—but not at all crazy about the havoc he’s wreaking. Determined to exorcise the demon, Dice accidentally sets Sin loose, gives him flesh, makes him formidable. 2. FLYGIRL by Sherri Lynn Smith

But even the WASP won’t accept her as a black woman, forcing Ida Mae to make a difficult choice of “passing,” of pretending to be white to be accepted into the program. Hiding one’s racial heritage, denying one’s family, denying one’s self is a heavy burden. And while Ida Mae chases her dream, she must also decide who it is she really wants to be.

7. THE NEW KID by Temple Mathews

6297248In most small towns, the New Kid is big news.

In Harrisburg, Washington, there’s something going on that’s even bigger.

Will Hunter is used to being the New Kid; Harrisburg High School is his fifth new school in less than three years. By now, he knows not to be fooled by the bright pep rallies, the wholesome jocks, the innocent cheerleaders. He knows the evil lurking underneath. It’s the same evil that took his dad eight years ago; the same evil he battles every day.

Natalie Holand’s life fell apart the night her sister Emily disappeared. No one believes her when she tells them what she saw: yellow eyes, glowing beneath the surface of the water in which Emily supposedly drowned. And Emily isn’t the only person to go missing in Harrisburg lately. The town is changing, not for the better, and Natalie doesn’t know why. What she does know is that, whatever’s happening, it’s bad, and the New Kid is right in the middle of it.

Because Will’s got a secret even bigger than Harrisburg’s . . . and there’s more to it than even he knows.

For the most part, Ernie and Will take life at high school in stride. Until Will has one very bad day. Now nothing is remotely funny. Ernie finds himself a witness—to loss, to humiliation, and to Will’s anger—an anger that’s building each and every moment.

10. DIARY OF A CHAV by Grace Dent

n286829Chav: (n.) A British insult for white working-class people fixated on street fashions derived from American hip-hop such as imitation gold and fake designer clothing, e.g., “It’s a bruv who wears crap clothing and manky gold jewelry, innit?”

16-year-old Shiraz Bailey Wood’s days are filled with hoodies, hip-hop, and hanging around outside Claire’s accessories. Her parents work crap jobs and her school is pretty much chav central. There’s not much goin’ on in the world of this lovable dreamer, and having a brain and a heart of gold only makes it worse. Shiraz loathes being called a chav because she may be poor but she’s not trashy, but she can’t do much about it–yet. Shiraz is beginning to feel there’s a lot more to life than minimum wage and the bling of a souped-up Vauxhall Nova.

Told in diary entries over the course of a year attending the unfortunately named “SuperChav Academy” (where she’ll do anything to prove she’s NOT a chav), Shiraz’s insanely funny voice and spirited narrative s how there is always a way to rise above any obstacle.

I rec’d several books this week.  I’m not going to put pictures for everything because I’m feeling a bit lazy this week and sometimes getting everything to line up just right is a chore.  So, here is the list with SOME covers and SOME descriptions.

1. IN THE SMALL by Michael Hague (Graphic Novel)

2. SHADOWED SUMMER by Saundra Mitchell (Thank you Saundra!)

shadowed-summer
Nothing ever happened in Ondine, Louisiana, not even the summer Elijah Landry disappeared.
His mother knew he ascended to heaven, the police believed he ran away, and his girlfriend thought he was murdered.
Decades later, certain she saw his ghost in the town cemetery, fourteen-year-old Iris Rhame is determined to find out the truth behind “The Incident With the Landry Boy.”
Enlisting the help of her best friend Collette, and forced to endure the company of Collette’s latest crush, Ben, Iris spends a summer digging into the past and stirring old ghosts, in search of a boy she never knew.  What she doesn’t realize is that in a town as small as Ondine, every secret is a family secret.
3. SUITE SCARLETT by Maureen Johnson
suite-scarlett
Scarlett is the third of four children in the Martin family. The Martins live in and manage a shabby hotel in NYC that dates back to the 1920s. When Scarlett turns 15, she is put in charge of one of the hotel’s 27 rooms- the Empire Suite. Into this room moves Mrs. Amberson, a failed 1970s starlet who has returned to New York to write her memoirs. Soon, Scarlett is taking dictation, running around town with Mrs. Amberson, and getting caught up in her Auntie Mame-meets-Bianca Jagger adventures.
In the midst of all this, Scarlett falls in love – or so she thinks – and it takes Mrs. Amberson to help her see the light.

5. THE INTERNS: FASHIONISTAS by Chloe Walsh

6. KISS MY BOOK by Jamie Michaels
7. THE PRETTY ONE by Cheryl Klam

 the-pretty-one
All Megan Fletcher had wanted was to be like her sister Lucy: a beautiful, thin girl whom everyone at the Chesapeake School for Performing Arts worshipped and adored. While Lucy was a star actress with lots of fans, Megan had always been hiding behind the set designs that she and her best friend Simon had created, hoping that no one would notice her.
And then one day, life as Megan knew it had changed forever. Megan was
in an accident that disfigured her face and plastic surgeons had to
restructure it very carefully. Only no one would have thought that when
the bandages came off, Megan would be even more beautiful than Lucy . . .

8. GENESIS by Bernard Beckett

genesis

Set on a remote island in a post-apocalyptic, plague-ridden world, this electrifying novel is destined to become a modern classic.Anax thinks she knows her history. She’d better. She’s now facing three Examiners, and her grueling all-day Examination has just begun. If she passes, she’ll be admitted into the Academy—the elite governing institution of her utopian society. But Anax is about to discover that for all her learning, the history she’s been taught isn’t the whole story. And that the Academy isn’t what she believes it to be.In this brilliant novel of dazzling ingenuity, Anax’s examination leads us into a future where we are confronted with unresolved questions raised by science and philosophy. Centuries old, these questions have gained new urgency in the face of rapidly developing technology. What is consciousness? What makes us human? If artificial intelligence were developed to a high enough capability, what special status could humanity still claim?Outstanding and original, Beckett’s dramatic narrative comes to a stunning close. This perfect combination of thrilling page-turner and provocative novel of ideas demands to be read again and again.
